Warm up with a day of movement. We’re taking over campus with an all-day get up, get outside, and get moving extravaganza. Inspired by National Recreational Sports and Fitness Day, we are teaming up with our partners on campus to offer a full day of (mostly) FREE opportunities to PLAY HARD. GET FIT. LIVE WELL. How will you celebrate?

All Day: Group Fitness Classes @ Natatorium

Prepare to be inspired, energized, and motivated. From 7am to 7:15pm, we’re offering all of our Group Fitness classes at the Natatorium for free. Must be a student or Rec Sports member to participate.

All Day: Chazen Step Challenge

This one’s for the multitaskers. During#ActiveBadger Day at the Chazen Museum of Art, you can enjoy self-guided tours throughout the exhibits to get your steps in while taking in the beauty around you. Handouts will be available with walking paths (and mileage information, of course)!

Museum hours: 9am to 9pm

7am: #ActiveBadger Breakfast @ Gordon Avenue Market and Four Lakes Market

Get #ActiveBadger Day started off on the right fork with a balanced breakfast from Gordon Avenue Market and Four Lakes Market. Available for purchase until 10:30am.

Menu:

  • Avocado Toast
  • Tofu Scramble
  • Sweet Potato Pancakes
  • Egg and Spinach Crepe

7:15am: Namaste & Parfait @ Gordon Dining & Events Center - Overture Room

You gotta Namaste before you parfait. Join us for a 45-minute flow followed by a yogurt parfait bar featuring Odyssey Greek Yogurt, KIND granola, and toppings provided by University Housing. Please bring your own towel or mat.

8:30am: "Mind-Body Skills to Foster Optimal Health" with Dr. Shilagh Mirgain @ Lake Mendota Room at Dejope

On #ActiveBadger Day, we drop knowledge. (Or, Dr. Shilagh Mirgain does.) Dr. Mirgain’s 1-hour presentation Mind-Body Skills to Foster Optimal Health will help you explore mindfulness practices, understand the science of habit change to move toward your goals, develop resilience to better manage stress, and see the healthy impact you can have on the world. Brought to you by Rec Sports and UHS.

Dr. Shilagh Mirgain is a Distinguished Psychologist specializing in Health and Sport Psychology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.  A sought after speaker, writer, facilitator and therapist, Shilagh is a frequent contributor to CBS 3 News in Madison and Wisconsin Public Radio. 

She writes and speaks on mind-body skills to foster optimal health.   Shilagh is also an accomplished researcher, lecturer and trainer in the field of Mindfulness Meditation. 

In her clinical practice, Shilagh specializes in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and chronic pain and mood and anxiety disorders.  Shilagh is also a sport psychologist to UW Badger student athletes. 

Shilagh received a B.A. from Wellesley College and a Ph.D. in Clinical and Community Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University.

10:30am: Flow & Go Yoga @ Grainger Hall Room 3190

Skip the caffeine and get your yoga on during this mid-morning pick-me-up. This 45-minute flow will leave you feeling grounded, energized, and ready to conquer the rest of your day!

11:30am: #ActiveBadger Lunch @ Gordon Avenue Market and Four Lakes Market

Stay fueled up and ready to go with a nutrient-dense meal at Gordon Avenue Market and Four Lakes Market. Available for purchase until 2pm.

Menu:

  • Grain Bar with a variety of grains and toppings
  • Mediterranean Cod

11:30am: Free FreshFin Poke Samples @ Natatorium

If you can’t make it to Gordon Avenue or Four Lakes Markets for an #ActiveBadger meal, grab a quick (and fresh!) snack from FreshFin Poke at the Natatorium. Samples include Spicy Tuna and Curry Coconut Chicken and will be available until 1pm or as supplies last.

12pm: Barre Fitness @ Red Gym

Meet us at the barre! This 45-minute workout is a mix of Pilates, dance, yoga, and functional training, choreographed to motivating and energizing music.

12pm: Workplace Workout @ Grainger Hall Room 3190

Join the resistance (band workout). We’ll be at Grainger Hall, Room 3190, teaching you exercises that are perfect to do during the day at your desk. Or at home. Or wherever you can bring a resistance band, really.

3pm: Matrix Treadmill Sprint 8® Workouts @ Ogg Hall Fitness Center

The science-based Sprint 8® cardio workout program has been proven to boost energy, reduce body fat, promote lean muscle mass, and improve cholesterol in just eight weeks. Matrix trainers will be at Ogg Hall Fitness Center leading participants through the guided workout, teaching the science behind the program, and motivating you every step of the way.

3:30pm: Yogaroma @ Nielsen Tennis Stadium presented by American Family Insurance

It’s time to stop and smell the essential oils. This 45-minute yoga class presented by American Family Insurance will be the perfect way to end your day. UW Hospital employees welcome. Pre-registration recommended.

4pm: CANCELLED Snowshoe Kickball @ Near East Fields

Unfortunately, the fields at Near East are too hard to play on and pose a safety concern, so we have cancelled Snowshoe Kickball. We apologize for the inconvenience. (And winter.)

4:30pm: George Ezra vs. Ariana Grande Yoga @ Memorial Union, TITU

We may not be in Budapest, but don’t say “thank u, next” to this class. Featuring music from George Ezra and Ariana Grande, this 45-minute flow will keep you on your toes wondering what’s next in the mash-up.

4:45pm: KIND Snacks Sampling @ Natatorium

#ActiveBadgers play hard, get fit, live well, and eat well. Our friends from KIND will be at the Natatorium giving away snacks to fuel you up before Log Rolling, Ninja Skills 101, and everything else you have planned today.

5pm: Log Rolling @ Natatorium Pool

Today’s not the day to be a bump on the log. Get to the Natatorium Diving Well and try one of the world’s most historic sports, key log rolling. Our staff will be there to teach you how!

5pm: Ninja Skills 101 @ Lathrop Hall Room B101

Bow to your sensei, young grasshopper. Members of our Sport Club program including Aikijujitsu, Japanese Karate, Shorin Ryu Karate, Taekwondo, and Kendo will be showing off their moves, teaching self-defense skills, and making all of your ninja dreams come true during this 2-hour workshop.

5pm: #ActiveBadger Dinner @ Gordon Avenue Market and Four Lakes Market

Recover from a full day of activity and refuel for a night of more with a dinner at Gordon Avenue Market and Four Lakes Market. Available for purchase.

6pm: Bowling Tournament @ Union South - The Sett

6pm: Virtual Reality Open House @ Gordon Dining and Event Center

Curious about what the Nicholas Recreation Center will look like? What it will feel like? Meet us at Gordon Dining and Event Center for a chance to walk through the building using virtual reality. Seriously.

6:30pm: Snowshoe Trek to Picnic Point led by Outdoor UW @ Memorial Union

Weather and ice conditions permitting, join Outdoor UW in a trek across Lake Mendota. We’ll strap on snowshoes and head out to enjoy a toasty bonfire and s’mores at Picnic Point. First come, first served. Meet at the Outdoor UW office in the lower level of Memorial Union beforehand and make sure to bundle up!

 

7:30pm: Kickboxing Intervals @ Natatorium Room 1065

Kick it up a notch with this 45-minute mix between boxing and HIIT. Pre-registration is recommended to reserve your spot!

11:15pm: Late Night Skate @ Shell

Finish off the day with Late Night Skate at the Shell. This weekly Rec Sports event is sure to draw a crowd, so get there early! Bring your own skates, or rent from the Shell for $3. Rink fees are $4 for UW students. Free ‘za courtesy of Ian’s Pizza (while supplies last).
