Academic Year Internships

  • Aquatics Intern

    The aquatics intern will gain valuable aquatic experience by assisting in the planning, development, and implementation of all aquatic related programs and services.

    General Expectations:

    • Develop and implement engaging in-service training sessions utilizing a variety of methods to maintain a highly trained staff
    • Evaluate programs and services to ensure excellence and quality
    • Assist with special events in aquatics
    • Assist managing the department’s safety protocols and procedures
    • Perform regular facility and equipment inspections

    Requirements & Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in related field

    • Must possess current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certifications
    • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification preferred, but not required

  • Communications Intern

The intern will play an integral role in developing high-level marketing materials for campus as we prepare to launch our new Recreation & Wellbeing brand and open the doors to an $87 million facility this year.

    • Develop engagement strategies to reach a wide target audience including more than 40,000 students and approximately 20,000 faculty, staff, and community members
    • Supervise team of student copywriters – edit and enforce brand standards for all written content
    • Maintain content schedule and ensure that all platforms are current, relevant, and engaging
    • Work closely with the Strategic Engagement & Wellbeing team to deliver a consistent brand message across all divisional platforms and to plan integrated marketing campaigns
    • Adhere to a consistent brand identity and voice for all written content

    Requirements and qualifications:

  • Competitive Sports Intern

    The competitive sports intern will gain valuable campus recreation and leadership experience by having active involvement in the overall program development, programming and evaluation of personnel. The intern will gain leadership experience in Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs programming, marketing, financial management, facility operations and personnel management, all while serving as a Rec Sports ambassador to the UW-Madison campus and community.

    • Assist with the supervision, management and mentorship of several student coordinators
    • Manage and execute programming responsibilities for select Intramural Sports leagues and special events, including revision of rules, marketing, monitoring of registration, communication with captains and participants, reschedules and playoff format, inventory control, assessment and evaluation
    • Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate Competitive Sports supervisors and Intramural Sports officials and scorekeepers
    • Serve as a liaison to select sport clubs, including all aspects of club oversight such as risk management, inventory, waiver collection, website update, monthly officer meetings and priority points tracking system
    • Maintain daily office hours to assist with the administrative duties including answering phone call and email correspondence, stocking first aid kits with proper supplies, record retention and filing, and customer service
    • Maintain a presence at Intramural Sports events and Sport Club practices and competitions
    • Collaborate with other interns to complete annual capstone project
    • Other duties as assigned

The intern will gain leadership experience by assisting in the management of the personal training and strength and conditioning program, while serving as a Rec Sports ambassador to the UW-Madison campus and community.

    • Maintain a personal training client load of at least four clients
    • Assist in the consulting with sport club coaches and athletes to devise team and individual workout programs for sport club athletes
    • Assist in the supervision of student staffing and programming of the Performance Training Center including personal training, small group training and Olympic Lifting training areas
    • Maintain accurate fiscal, payroll, incident, and accident reports
    • Manage and maintain updated CPR records for group fitness classes
    • Perform scheduled upkeep of personal training and performance training areas, including maintenance of major and minor equipment in these areas
    • Collaborate with other interns to complete annual capstone project

    Requirements & Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in related field
    • Demonstrated communication, leadership, and organizational skills
    • Personal training certification from a nationally accredited organization (NSCA, ACSM, ACE, NASM or other NCCA accredited body)
    • USA Weightlifting certification (preferred)

  • Graphic Design Intern

This internship also includes leadership and development of a small team of student designers.

    • Plan and create content for students, faculty/staff, donors, corporations, and campus administrators to be distributed via the website, social media, emails, and printed materials
    • Assist in the development and execution of the annual Rec Sports marketing and communication plan
    • Assist the coordinators of marketing and communications in managing graphic design and multimedia student staff (including developing schedules, delegating and coordinating assignments, offering creative feedback and constructive criticism, and enforcing deadlines)
    • Work with coordinators of marketing and communication to evaluate the effectiveness of marketing campaigns and initiatives throughout the year
    • Collaborate with other interns to complete annual capstone project

    Requirements and Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree and work experience or coursework related to graphic design

  • Member Services Intern

    The member services intern will gain valuable collegiate recreation and leadership experience by having active involvement in the overall Member Services department development, including staffing, pricing structures, software management, and budgeting. The professional intern will play an integral role in the day-to-day management of the Rec Sports Member Services offices at all Rec Sports facilities.

    • Oversee up to three student employee Leads who assist in administrative duties for the Member Services department
    • Follow up with members on questions, comments and concerns through email, phone, and face-to-face interactions
    • Assist with the overall management of comprehensive campus recreation software InnoSoft Fusion
    • Work closely with the Member Services staff to move into and set up Member Services in the Nicholas Recreation Center
    • Support Grand Opening events for the Nicholas Recreation Center
    • Collaborate with the finance team on inventory, trainings, reconciliations, PCI compliance, and establishing cash handling policies/procedures
    • Maintain open recreation equipment inventory and propose improvements to the process for restitution of outstanding or lost equipment
    • Create and maintain data tracking documentation for membership, service, and product revenue
    • Assist in planning and support of Divisional events such as Homecoming 5K, tennis tournaments, welcome week activities, and student employment events, which may include some evening and weekend hours

    • Coordinate the maintenance and cleaning maps for the Nicholas Recreation Center

  • Marketing & Communications Intern

    Now hiring! 

    The marketing and communications summer interns will play a pivotal role in executing our brand launch, planning for the grand opening of the $87.5M Nicholas Recreation Center, and developing creative content to educate and inspire the UW-Madison campus. In this position, you will gain valuable, real-world experience in marketing and branding, content creation, campus recreation, and leadership.

    General Expectations:

    Responsibilities:

    • Engage with and educate incoming first year students about Rec Sports offerings during Student Orientation and Registration (SOAR) resource fairs
    • Schedule student shifts and manage inventory for SOAR handouts and giveaways
    • Compile data, write stories, and assist in developing the layout for the 2018-19 Annual Report
    • Assist in planning integrated marketing campaigns by brainstorming and contributing original, creative, and engaging ideas

    Sample Projects:

    • Plan and create graphic design assets, communication plans, and timelines for integrated marketing campaigns, including Wisconsin Welcome for new students and Nicholas Recreation Center grand opening (skills developed: campaign planning, strategy, graphic design, writing)
    • Assist in brand transition from Rec Sports to University Recreation & Wellbeing (skills developed: rebranding, strategy, planning, organization)
    • Identify opportunities to recruit new members and develop a communication strategy that connects with target audiences

    Requirements and Qualifications:

    The operations summer intern will play an integral role in the opening of the Nicholas Recreation Center (the Nick). They will gain valuable campus recreation and leadership experience in developing plans, executing projects, and maintaining budgets and timelines.

    • Organize bids for equipment purchases over $5,000
    • Emergency Action Plan preparation for the Nick
    • Coordinate the checklist and tasks for student employees on Connect2Concepts software
    • Coordinate the maintenance and cleaning maps for the Nick
    • Assist in the creation of facility tour scripts for the Nick

    • Coordinate and program weekly campus field trips
    • Work within CampDoc software to maintain health records, registration materials, and additional administrative reports
    • Assist in the conflict management and discipline of campers
    • Coordinate and develop plans for all mental, emotional, and social health needs of staff and youth participants through staff trainings and implementation into program structure
    • Review and assist in the development of annual report of program performance
    • Recruit, select, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate seasonal staff members
    • Oversee and implement processes for meeting medical and/or behavioral needs of youth participants

  • Wellbeing Intern

    Now hiring!

    The wellbeing interns will gain valuable skills and help develop a new wellbeing program at Rec Sports. The interns will create a gap analysis related to student wellbeing and develop a needs assessment and program assessment related to student wellbeing. These are unique positions where interns will be able to apply academic knowledge in an untraditional public health setting.

    General Expectations:

    • Develop professional relationships with coworkers and participants
    • Demonstrate a desire to learn and apply knowledge within the Division
    • Exhibit professionalism in dress, attitude, and work ethic
    • Contribute to the fulfillment of the Rec Sports mission and values
    • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and organized
    • Able to work and communicate effectively with a diverse range of groups, professionals, agencies, and community members
    • Respond to emergency situations and adhere to established protocols

    Responsibilities:

    • Assist in identifying the gaps in wellbeing for students on the UW-Madison campus
    • Analyze current wellbeing services and programs for students at UW-Madison and identify new opportunities
    • Research and compile examples of evidence-based wellbeing programs that other universities are currently offering
    • Collaborate with other campus departments to gain additional information
    • Work with internal Rec Sports Assessment Committee to gain understanding of current services and programs

Program Goals

The goals of the professional internship program are:

  • To provide interns with the experience upon which to build professional careers and practice the application of skills
  • To allow interns to apply, evaluate, test, and integrate academic knowledge and theoretical concepts in a work setting
  • To develop and expand interns’ knowledge about themselves and their professional abilities, goals, and career interests in a work setting
  • To expand interns’ awareness of the university campus and the field of campus recreation
  • To provide interns with experience in the disciplined and discriminatory use of evidence in making decisions and solving problems in a work setting
  • To enhance the perspective of the Division by bringing in novel perspective and creative ideas
  • To leverage specialized strengths and skills sets of the intern in order to augment the abilities of the professional staff
