Skate Rentals

A valid ID card or Rec Sports Membership is required.

Open to all users of the Shell ice rink. Available for purchase at the Shell Member Services Office.

NEW! Skate Memberships.

Skate Memberships are sold by semester. Fall Skate Memberships are currently available for purchase- see below for pricing!

Student Skate Membership - $30/semester

Open to enrolled UW-Madison students.  Available for purchase online or at the Shell Member Services office.

Rec Sports Member Skate Pass - $40/semester

Open to anyone with a current Rec Sports Membership. Available for purchase online or at the Shell Member Services office.

Non-Rec Sports Member Skate Pass - $50/semester

Open to any non-Rec Sports Member.  This membership includes only ice rink usage during open skate times.  Available for purchase at the Shell Member Services office.

Learn to Skate

This class offers an introduction to any form of skating and focuses on teaching the basic elements that would allow you to progress into hockey, figure skating, or skating for fun. Must be 18 years or older to participate.

Students: $60  Affiliates: $70  Community: $90 

Designed for:

  • Skaters with little or no experience

Prerequisites:

  • None

Class Components:

  • Forward and backward skating
  • Turns
  • Stops

 

Private Skate Lessons

Private skate lessons will be offered at select times during Open Skate. If interested, register and select all times that you are available. Our instructors will contact you individually to set up the lesson.

Prerequisites:

  • None

Class Components:

  • Skater(s) can choose to learn basic skating, figure skating, or hockey skating
  • Lessons are 30 minutes 

Times Available: 

Sunday 1pm - 3:30pm 
Monday  11am - 2pm, 6:15pm - 7:15pm
Wednesday 11am - 2pm, 6:15pm - 7:15pm 
Thursday  11:15am - 12:45pm
Friday  11pm - 2pm

3-Pack Deal:

If you are interested in taking more classes, purchase the private lesson's 3-pack deal for a reduced cost.

Ice Policies.

General Policies

  • Instruction by skating professionals during open rec skating sessions is prohibited
  • Rec Sports staff has the authority to stop any activity that may create maintenance or safety concerns
  • Skating direction is at the discretion of staff on duty

Open Hockey

  • Participants must be at least 18 years of age
  • The first two goalies to arrive for each session will be admitted at no charge (still must pay equipment rental, if needed)
  • Helmets are required and may be rented from the front desk for $2 

Stick & Puck

  • Participants must be at least 18 years of age
  • Helmet and gloves are required 
  • No pick-up games are permitted
