Who Can Play?
All currently enrolled UW-Madison students and faculty/staff that have paid the Recreation Membership Fee are eligible to participate. Spouse/domestic partners may not participate in the Intramural Sports program. For the summer session, incoming freshmen are not eligible to participate.
How Do I Sign Up?
Entries for team and individual/dual sports are taken during designated dates and times listed on the IM Calendar. Click on the interested sport on the IM Calendar for a detailed information sheet about the sign-up. We encourage people to sign up early, as there is generally a limit to the number of teams we can accept. Play days and times are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
What If I Don't Have a Team?
A Free Agent List is posted on-line. You can sign up or just try to pick up a few extra people for a team.
What If My Team Needs More Players?
Check out the online Free Agent List. Just remember that a player is only allowed to play for one single gender team and one Co-Rec team. View the free agents.
Can I Play On More Than One Team?
Players may only play on one single gender team and one Co-Rec team in the same sport. Example: A person may compete on a Co-Rec team at the same time they participate on a single gender team (i.e. Men's or Women's). This also means a participant may not participate in a men's recreational league at the SERF and a competitive league at the Nat.
How Many People Can Be On My Roster?
- Team Sports: 20 people
- Individual Sports (1 on 1): One person
- Dual Sports (2 on 2): Three people
- Special Events: Roster number will be specified.
Can I Play In the Men's League If I Am A Woman?
If a women's and Co-Rec league is offered, then a woman will not be allowed to participate in the men's league. If a women's and Co-Rec league is not offered, then a woman will be allowed to participate in the men's league.
How Long Is the Season?
The length of the season depends upon the sport. Check the Info Sheet for more details. There are three formats that will be used: a single elimination tournament, three week round-robin followed by a single-elimination playoff tournament for teams that have finished the season with a .500 record or a five week round-robin regular season with a bye week incorporated followed by a single-elimination playoff tournament for teams that have finished the season with a .500 record or better.
Do We Need ID Cards Every Game? Why?
YES! UW-Madison ID cards are required during all intramural sports activities. In other words, you must have your UW Student ID for EVERY GAME in order to participate. There are NO EXCEPTIONS!!
Valid UW ID's are required for access to all of our programs and facilities. While upgrades have been made to assist in the identification of intramural participants without UW ID's, it is imperative that we still require students to all have valid UW ID's for these reasons:
- A valid UW ID can serve as the primary identification of a student participant, and will have the student's UW ID number on that card, which is what we need to be 100% certain the person is who they say they are. We do not have many people that try to play illegally, but only valid students should be the ones allowed to participate in our programs, since they provide the funding.
- By requiring UW ID's, it keeps us consistent throughout the year, for both indoor and outdoor sports. If we were to allow only driver's licenses for outdoor intramural activities, the participants would become accustomed to this procedure, and then be denied access to the indoor facilities, as there is a very strict policy of "No UW ID, No Access". This would lead to forfeits and/or participants not being allowed into the facilities to play their scheduled games.
- Valid UW ID's are required for libraries, UW Transportation, Athletics, and the Unions. We are only trying to stay consistent by enforcing the same procedures across campus. By bringing only an UW ID, we are also not asking you to show or leave your Driver's license with us, which is much more difficult to replace if lost, or stolen.
What Are the Rules Covering the Male/Female Ratio For Co-Rec Teams?
The difference between the number of males to females cannot be greater than one on the court or field at the same time (i.e. 3 men and 2 women or 2 men and 3 women).
What if the Wrong Score is Listed Online?
If the wrong score is listed on the website, the captain should contact the Intramural Sports Webmaster at imsports@recsports.wisc.edu immediately.
When Are the Playoff Schedules Posted? Where?
The information about the playoff schedules is in the Captain's Notes. The schedules will be posted on the IM web site and respective buildings.
Can I Just Play During Playoffs?
A player must be listed on the team roster prior to the last game of the regular season in order to be eligible for the playoffs. For Tournament only activities, the roster becomes final following the team's first contest.
How Do I Add Players To My Roster?
The roster is compiled from the game score sheets. Participants are added after each game. Teams can add a player to their roster at any time during the regular season by either adding them to the score sheet during the game, stopping by the Natatorium Program Office (room 1180), or emailing them to imsports@recsports.wisc.edu.
How Will I Know if the Games Are Canceled?
The decisions to cancel outdoor games will be made by 3:00 p.m. on weekdays and 12 Noon on Sunday. The decision may also be determined at game time by the Intramural Sports Student Coordinator on duty. Teams should call the Rec Sports Hotline (608-262-4756) and choose the Intramural Sports Cancellation (#3) menu option for cancellation information. Regular season games cancelled due to inclement weather will not be rescheduled. Playoff games cancelled due to inclement weather will be rescheduled if possible.
If My Game Has Been Rescheduled, How Do I Find the New Schedule?
The revised schedule will be posted on the web by 10:00 a.m. the next morning.
What If My Team Can't Play As Scheduled?
Regular season games are not rescheduled. If your team can't play, a team representative should contact the Rec Sports Office listed below at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled game time to report a cancellation. Sunday games must be cancelled by 4:00 p.m. on the previous Friday. A team may only cancel two contests in any sport season. Cancellations during playoffs or in activities that are offered only as tournament will eliminate your team from further competition. If the game is not cancelled by the deadline listed above, the game will be considered a forfeit and the forfeit fee will be required.
What Are the Forfeit Policies?
There are two policies in place for team forfeits - a No-Show Policy and a Default Policy:
- A No-Show occurs when the entire team fails to check-in with the supervisor or official at the scheduled location within 10 minutes of the scheduled time of contest. The team will be charged a fee of $25.00.
- A Default occurs when members of a team have checked in with the supervisor or official at the scheduled location within 10 minutes of the scheduled time of contest with less than the number of required players by rule. The team will be charged a fee of $10.00.
All fees must be paid at the Natatorium Program Office (room 1180) within 48 hours or else a hold will be placed on the captain's academic record and the team will be dropped from further competition.
