ACE Personal Training

ACE® Personal Trainer Exam Prep Course

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) Personal Trainer Exam Prep course prepares you for a career as a personal fitness trainer. The fitness industry offers many full or part-time employment opportunities for personal trainers who have an accredited certification, knowledge, people skills and a passion for helping others. This 10-week course is offered to students and community residents. UW-Madison students who take the course may qualify for employment with Rec Sports.

All course materials and textbooks are included. Upon completion, take the ACE computer-based test right on campus. Students in class receive a discounted exam fee.

American Red Cross® Aquatics Courses. 

Certifications for lifeguards, lifeguard instructors, and water safety instructors.

Lifeguard Training

Learn to respond to aquatic emergencies.

$250

Prerequisites:

  • Must be 15 years old on or before the last day of the course
  • Swim 300 yards using a combination of freestyle (with rotary breathing and a strong kick) and breaststroke with correct coordination
  • Tread water for two minutes, legs only
  • 10-pound object retrieval from 7’10” depth
  • Successful completion of online session of course prior to first class meeting (further instructions will be provided upon registration)

  • Learn water rescue skills, CPR/AED, and First Aid

Lifeguarding Instructor

Learn to teach American Red Cross® Lifeguarding courses.

Prerequisites:

  • At least 17 years old
  • Possess one of the following:
  • Current American Red Cross® certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED
  • Successful completion of the Lifeguarding Instructor online session prior to the first class meeting (further instructions will be provided upon registration)

Class Components:

  • Learn how to teach Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Administering Emergency Oxygen, and Bloodborne Pathogens Training

Water Safety Instructor

Learn to teach youth and adults how to be safe in and around the water.

$300

Prerequisites:

  • Must be at least 18 years old at the start of the course
  • Must be able to tread water for 1 minute
  • Must be able to float on back for 1 minute
  • Must be able to swim 24 yards of front crawl, back crawl, elementary back stroke, and side stroke
  • Must be able to swim yards using butterfly

  • Online learning and assessment
  • In-person skills session to develop instructional skills in and out of the water
  • Learn to teach youth and adults how to be safe in and around the water

Learn to respond to first aid, breathing, and cardiac emergencies.

Class Components:

  • Recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac and breathing emergencies
  • Learn the skills needed to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel become available

Successful completion of the course results in a valid two-year certification for Adult First Aid/CPR/AED.

CPR/FA/AED for the Professional Rescuer 

Designed for individuals with a duty to respond to emergencies.

Class Components:

  • Professional-level rescuers will be trained to respond to cardiac and breathing emergencies in adults, children, and infants until more advanced medical personnel become available

Successful completion of the course results in a valid two-year certification for CPR/FA/AED for the Professional Rescuer.

POUND Instructor Training

Learn everything you need to be a *rockstar* POUND instructor in this one-day, 8-hour training. Hosted by POUND Icon Erica Lewandowski, you'll also receive six tracks of choreography, access to an online instructor network, the basic positions and certificate of completion!

Self-Defense Workshop

Class participants will learn fundamental safety principles like avoidance, awareness, and mindset in combination with physical techniques that will equip students with a further knowledge of mindset and physical technique that will help in self-defense situations.

USA Weightlifting

USA Weightlifting and Sports Performance Coaching Course

Learn to design safe training programs for yourself and for others in this two-day course led by former USA Olympic Coach Roger Nielsen. You will gain baseline knowledge about designing training programs and about the technical rules of Olympic weightlifting. Not only will you improve your own technique, but you will be certified to push others to perform at their highest potential.

  • USAW Sport Performance certification (USAW Club Coach certification may be achieved with successful passing of criminal background screening)
