ACE® Metabolic Workshop

In this one day workshop, you will learn strategies to help clients overcome plateaus and achieve weight-loss goals with high-intensity metabolic conditioning. With the success of popular HIIT programs, it's no secret that high-intensity drills and movements can help clients shed pounds. This interactive workshop gives you the tools to deliver those sessions in a safe, effective, and fun way that keeps your clients coming back for more.

You will learn: 

  • To explain a personal trainer’s scope of practice for providing nutritional advice to clients 
  • How identifying Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) can determine the optimal level of caloric intake for promoting weight loss 
  • Role of macronutrients and how they relate to physical activity 
  • To estimate the energy cost of exercise using Metabolic Equivalents (METs) 
  • Program design using the ACE Integrated Fitness Training® (ACE IFT®) model for clients who want to lose weight

ACE Personal Training

ACE® Personal Trainer Exam Prep Course

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) Personal Trainer Exam Prep course prepares you for a career as a personal fitness trainer. The fitness industry offers many full or part-time employment opportunities for personal trainers who have an accredited certification, knowledge, people skills and a passion for helping others. This 10-week course is offered to students and community residents. UW-Madison students who take the course may qualify for employment with Rec Sports.

  • Learn the skills necessary to be a top-notch trainer
  • Help prepare you for the ACE® Personal Trainer Exam
All course materials and textbooks are included. Upon completion, take the ACE computer-based test right on campus. Students in class receive a discounted exam fee.

American Red Cross® Aquatics Courses. 

Certifications for lifeguards, lifeguard instructors, and water safety instructors.

Lifeguard Training

Learn to respond to aquatic emergencies.

$250

Prerequisites:

  • Must be 15 years old on or before the last day of the course
  • Swim 300 yards using a combination of freestyle (with rotary breathing and a strong kick) and breaststroke with correct coordination
  • Tread water for two minutes, legs only
  • 10-pound object retrieval from 7’10” depth
  • Successful completion of online session of course prior to first class meeting (further instructions will be provided upon registration)

  • Learn water rescue skills, CPR/AED, and First Aid

Lifeguarding Instructor

Learn to teach American Red Cross® Lifeguarding courses.

Prerequisites:

  • At least 17 years old
  • Possess one of the following:
  • Current American Red Cross® certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED
  • Successful completion of the Lifeguarding Instructor online session prior to the first class meeting (further instructions will be provided upon registration)

Class Components:

  • Learn how to teach Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Administering Emergency Oxygen, and Bloodborne Pathogens Training

Water Safety Instructor

Learn to teach youth and adults how to be safe in and around the water.

Prerequisites:

  • Must be at least 16 years old at the start of the course
  • Must be able to tread water for 1 minute
  • Must be able to float on back for 1 minute
  • Must be able to swim 24 yards of front crawl, back crawl, elementary back stroke, and side stroke
  • Must be able to swim yards using butterfly

Class Components:

  • Online learning and assessment
  • In-person skills session to develop instructional skills in and out of the water
  • Learn to teach youth and adults how to be safe in and around the water

Class Components:

  • Recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac and breathing emergencies
  • Learn the skills needed to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel become available

Successful completion of the course results in a valid two-year certification for Adult First Aid/CPR/AED.

professional rescuer  

CPR/FA/AED for the Professional Rescuer 

Designed for individuals with a duty to respond to emergencies.

Prerequisites:

None

Class Components:

  • Professional-level rescuers will be trained to respond to cardiac and breathing emergencies in adults, children, and infants until more advanced medical personnel become available

Successful completion of the course results in a valid two-year certification for CPR/FA/AED for the Professional Rescuer.

Self-Defense Workshop

Class participants will learn fundamental safety principles like avoidance, awareness, and mindset in combination with physical techniques that will equip students with a further knowledge of mindset and physical technique that will help in self-defense situations.

USA Weightlifting

Introduction to Olympic Weightlifting

Learn the basic body positions, movement patterns, and lifts of Olympic weightlifting. Participants will progress from using just the barbell to adding weight plates. This class's objective is to develop a solid foundation for safe Olympic weightlifting practices.

Designed for:

  • Participants with little to no experience in Olympic weightlifting who are interested in learning proper technique and safe form.

Course Components:

  • 90 minutes of instruction
  • Proper warm-up technique for Olympic weightlifting
  • Safety cues and technique instruction
  • Practice of the following lifts: snatch, clean, jerk, overhead squat, and more
  • Course includes a test-out to earn a free Platform Pass in the Nat PTC
