Choose from four levels of classes designed for beginner to experienced swimmers.

All classes and lessons are taught by American Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructors.
Lessons are available for all UW students and Affiliate Rec Sports Members.

Beginner Level

Gain confidence and self-reliance in the water.

Designed for:

  • Swimmers with little or no swimming experience

Prerequisites:

  • No experience required

Class Components:

  • Safe water entry and exit
  • Basic breath control
  • Body balance (float on your front and back)
  • Glide on front and back
  • Introduction to front crawl (freestyle) and back crawl (backstroke)
  • Swim a width of the shallow end

advanced-beginner swimmer

Advanced Beginner Level

Build your confidence while developing fundamental stroke and breathing techniques.

$60

Designed for:

  • Swimmers who are comfortable in shallow water and have been introduced to deep water

Prerequisites:

  • Float for 30 seconds on front and back
  • Ability to comfortably submerge head under water
  • Demonstrate stroke technique of front crawl

Class Components:

  • Practice and improve front and back crawl
  • Rotary breathing in front crawl
  • Introduction to elementary backstroke and breaststroke
  • Open turns
  • Treading water and deep water safety

intermediate swimmer

Intermediate Level

Improve stroke proficiency in front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke.

Designed for:

  • Swimmers with experience swimming front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke
  • Swimmers who are comfortable swimming the length of the pool

Prerequisites:

  • Float on back for one minute in deep water
  • Swim at least 25 yards of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke

Class Components:

  • Streamline positioning
  • Flip turns
  • Treading water techniques
  • Introduction to butterfly and sidestroke
  • Diving safety

Swim for Fitness

Increase speed and efficiency of your strokes while learning how to plan a workout.

$60

Designed for:

  • Experienced swimmers who are comfortable in any water depth
  • Swimmers interested in refining their stroke techniques
  • Swimmers interested in improving endurance

Prerequisites:

  • Tread water for five minutes
  • Swim at least 50 yards of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke

Class Components:

  • Improve endurance for all strokes
  • Open turns and flip turns
  • Pool etiquette for lap swimming
  • Learn principles of designing a fitness program
  • Calculation of target heart rate

Individualized instruction that addresses your personal goals and needs.

Private Lessons are offered at both the SERF and Nat pools. Please note that private lessons may not be available during academic breaks. 

Masters Swimming.

Training workouts designed and led by an experienced coach.

Semester Workouts

Prerequisites:

  • Ability to swim at least three of the four competitive strokes 
    (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle)
  • Ability to swim 500 yards continuously

  • Warm-up
  • Speed and pace work

Scuba Diving Course.

The first step to becoming PADI-certified.

Scuba

Learn to safely explore the underwater world as a PADI-certified scuba diver. PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) is the largest and most widely recognized scuba certification in the world.

Designed for:

  • Aspiring divers interested in a supportive and enjoyable educational experience
  • Adventurous participants interested in learning a new skill
  • Divers interested in exploring underwater adventures all over the world

Prerequisites:

  • Swim 200 yards (no time limit and any stroke may be used)
  • Float and tread water for 10 minutes

Required textbooks:

  • 2013 PADI Open Water Dive Manual

Textbooks for classroom instruction may be purchased from the instructor for $45 (email koz@kosmicdivers.com) or from a retailer of your choosing.

Class Components:
  • Pool sessions in the Nat diving well
  • Classroom lecture
  • Safety concept and skill mastery

At the end of the course, you will have the option to attend open-water dives which, if successfully completed, will lead to PADI certification.
